Hail bureaucracy

Alright alright. It’s not THAT bad. In the airport passport check I did not have to show anything but my passport, Visa and DS-2019 and after that, a nice fellow in customs looked through my bag with plastic gloves, asking me why I traveled to Egypt back in 2004 (yes, he did). You know, the usual…

But still, there IS a lot of paperwork, and a lot of different things to take care of. These last three days I have been running (literally) around campus trying to get everything to fit since I am not only a new student, I am also going to teach Danish a couple of hours a week. And I almost did something wrong. I need work permission to do the teaching and the university was trying to get that for me. No way, that’s not the procedure. Everything has to go through the IIE which fortunately are pretty helpful but still lifts their fingers saying, that I could risk getting deported if I do something wrong. But I hopefully just got that sorted out.

Housing is still a problem but I hope to get a place to stay very soon. And another problem right now is being a Graduate Teaching Fellow in one department and a student in another. There’s a lot of walking back and forth.

I still love it here though but as I told a lot of people back home just before I left, I am looking forward to the end of the month (now more than ever) when all paperwork should be in place. I am easily stressed and I do not like bureaucracy. The best story so far is from the bank, believe it or not. I just walked in from the street and half an hour later I was a customer and not only that; they printed a Visa debet card for me while I was waiting and I had immediate webbank access and a possible interest of more than 4%. I never experienced that in Denmark, that’s for sure.

I haven’t had the time to take some pictures yet so the posts are not very interesting to look at right now. Things take time… yeah, I learned that already.

  1. Hey there Patrick,

Yeah, I have actually made a map but I need to pin the different points and share it on wordpress. There is probably some nifty little plugin for this :-)
