The Emerald City

Last weekend, I visited “The Emerald City”, a popular name for the city of Seattle, Washington. And the name suits the city well. Seattle is a very cool city and the first major big city, I visited yet, complete with skyline and tons of attractions. Eugene is also nicknamed The Emerald City and the University of Oregon student newspaper is called The Daily Emerald. Interesting coincidence…

The drive to Seattle was about 5 hours which is not very much by American standards. I went there with Yann, Antti and Thomas and we had a very productive weekend. We visited the big University of Washington campus, the Space Needle with its nice view of the city, the Experience Music Project/The Science Fiction Museum having interesting exhibitions and weird architecture, the first Starbucks shop at Pike Place Market and much more.

Decoupling from my everyday life for a weekend was just what I needed to handle the busy times ahead. With only 3 weeks left of school, the workload is starting to get really nasty.

I am definitely going back to Seattle. I really enjoyed being there but I am sure that USA is a wonderland full of surprises to come. And I like being surprised like that.

  1. You saw this coming, but I am really disappointed that you didn’t visit Microsoft (and got me a job).

Looks like you’re having a lot of fun though.

  2. Believe me, I really wanted to visit Microsoft but time constraints and less-excited-about-Microsoft-than-me friends prevented that.

But the trip was nevertheless very exciting indeed.

  3. Sooo… next up is San Francisco and from there Silicon Valley and Google. Way cooler than Microsoft anyway :)

  4. Hmm, it could be quite interesting to visit both to see the difference. But I think it is pretty difficult to get a tour in either place :-)
